"Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing there is a field. ![]() Last week, I was asked this profound spiritual question, "Do you sing"? At first, I answered in the negative, because I perceived the query at face value. Later, the words fell deeper within me and the answer rose to the surface. Two days ago, I watched this year's Academy Award winning best feature documentary, "20 Feet From Stardom". If you view it from society's conditioned perspective, one can measure each background singer's road in life with the ruler of fame and fortune. Go below the superficial and the teachings of this beautifully filmed message become apparent. Supporting voices play an equally important role as the lead singer in a group. Like the church choir, each individual voice is uniquely modulated to blend in with the whole. When they achieve synergy, the voices of the many build on the foundation laid down by each individual contribution. As the energetic power builds, both the singers and their audience are lifted by the transcendence of the moment. Like a flock of Canadian geese, we are meant to fly and experience all the positions in the formation of life. Sometimes we are asked to lead, and we find ourselves in front of the group. Other times, we are the wing-men/women. Most times, we stay behind these two roles. In the back, where we can rest and ready ourselves, until we hear the call to fly forward, again....and sing the song within us.
