This is a phrase that we hear often these days, but what does it truly mean?
Days before my flight back to British Columbia, I was taking a walk with my friend and neighbour, when we stopped at a local store for something to drink. On the counter near the cash register, there was an open newspaper with that exact statement as the headline to an article.
Again, messages are everywhere if you just take the time to notice them.
Obviously, the phrase taken at face value refers to the act of paddling downstream rather than upstream against the current. Yet, there is much more to this statement. It actually also means that we should flow with the energy that gives us life and purpose. In our western way of living, we have been taught that everything happens in our mind. In other words, we are using our thoughts in the wrong direction.
We need to allow the flow of energy to direct our life course based on the desires and feelings we create. Just as you are in a canoe floating on the river, you are also in your body within the river of life. We have free will and are paddling, but we do not realize that the river can assist us rather than deter us.
It is all about working with life. When there is resistance, or upstream paddling, there is hardship and suffering. If we do nothing, but get out of our own way, we allow for the flow of energy to assist us and co-create our best life and that is all that is required.
Visualize someone pushing a car uphill and you get the picture of why we make our lives more difficult than they need to be.
Our fears, our doubts and our worries are all ways we paddle against the current. Our joy, our laughter and our kindness, are all ways we paddle with the current.
May you turn your canoe downstream and go with the flow.
